Heroes: Convergence
This last episode certainly had a lot going on. I counted at least 5 plotlines, all of them with movement. Yes- this entry is chock full of spoilers, so stop now if you haven’t seen the ep.
Last week we saw “Jessica” line up to shoot her ex-husband, D.L. This week we got to see her take a couple more shots while D.L. demonstrated how convenient it is to be able to phase out. There’s a chase through the woods, including a Fight Club moment where Jessica explains to Niki how things work now. But Jessica makes the mistake of hurting Micah as she’s trading super-strength punches with D.L., and Niki comes back to the fore. Niki decides that turning herself in is the only way to keep the people she loves safe.
Meanwhile, Eden sets Isaac free and he is finally able to meet up with Hiro. Hiro shows Isaac one of the comics from the future, and Isaac sits down to paint while sober. He paints an awesome picture of Hiro confronting a dinosaur with only a sword. This brings up a question–is he painting the future or the past? Or Hiro having traveled to the past sometime in the future? Hiro makes a Twilight Zone reference, “What if I step on a bug?” Rest easy, Hiro; we already know you can’t change the past.
My personal theory: we haven’t seen any shape-shifters yet. I want to see one of the people on the list get pissed off and go all T-Rex on Hiro’s ass.
Now Eden, not content to just let Isaac go, takes it into her own hands to take out Sylar. Admittedly, this would probably be best for everyone. It’s always frustrating when you see the heroes fail repeatedly because they’re not simply willing to shoot the bad guy in the head. Of course, in order for her to use her power, Eden must have to turn off whatever it is that is blocking Sylar’s powers. And that was her biiiig mistake. Sylar rips her right through the glass and someone gets shot. They’re very careful not to show us who, or how badly. They promised us a death in the previews, so we can only presume that Eden is dead.
On multiple occasions they let us know that Claire’s dad is working at the Primatech “paper company.” This has to be the best damn paper company ever. They get psi-proof rooms, personal super heroes, and all the free paper they want.
Just how long has Mr. Bennet known what is going on? Has he known since he adopted Claire? Was he more than a dozen years ahead of the game?
Clearly the Haitian has had time to develop his powers. He seems to be able to block any of the new heroes, though we saw Matt break through that just enough this week to get one word: Sylar. The plotlines are weaving their way together. And the Haitian showed us something else this week. His loyalty to Mr. Bennet is not as unwavering as it has appeared. It looks like he’s going to let Claire keep her memory, even after mind-wiping Claire’s brother, her friend, and her mother “all those times.” What game is he playing? And what is the extent of his powers? We know that he (or something) can block Matt’s mind-reading, and we know that he (or something) can totally erase memories. We also know that Bennet is willing to go so far as to mindwipe his own daughter.
Peter Petrelli ends up in jail and there is a fantastic scene where the mind-reading feedback bounces back and forth between him and Matt. Peter learns a little more about what’s going on with Sylar, and Matt and his partner learn a little more, too. The plotlines are coming together. Convergence.
Peter has two dreams this episode. One is that Nathan has come to get him out of jail, but he turns into Sylar and Peter wakes up afraid. Nathan does show up to pick up Peter just a bit later. Then, when Peter falls down outside the jail house, he has a second dream. Isaac Mendez tells Hiro that he painted a man exploding; Peter dreams that he is this man.
Could it be he absorbs the wrong power and isn’t able to handle it? Could Peter be the source of all this? Something tells me it’s not that simple.
