Heroes: How does it go on?

So, the long dark night has begun, and we’re all waiting for the dawn, the day in January when Heroes comes back with new episodes. I suppose the mild distraction of Christmas and New Years might make the wait bearable, or the new Sci-Fi miniseries The Lost Room which premiered last night, but really we just have to face up to the fact that reality will be a tepid, washed-out mockery until our favorite escape returns.

Suffering the wait makes me wonder what we will do when Heroes ends for real, and has me pondering how it will go on in the years to come. Are they going to drag out the “end of the world” plotline for several seasons? And will it really be the End Of The World(tm), Jericho style, or will it merely represent a smaller end of one city. After all, if it’s just Peter Petrelli (or the radioactive man) blowing up, he couldn’t take out that much.

My theory–and my hope–is that the heroes reach that critical juncture by the end of the season. In fact, I hope they succeed… sort of. I want to see the rejoicing in averting the terrible future foreseen… only to come to the crushing realization, moments later, that they only stopped one end of the world. I want the explosion to be the tip of the iceburg, and I want Hiro to have to fling them all back to start over and try again.
