One Season Wonders: Firefly (2002)

What can I say about Firefly that hasn’t already been said? It isn’t just a TV show, it’s a phenomenon. As someone who talked a friend into knitting a Jayne cap, I’m familiar with the phenomenon.

Firefly

So I’ll talk about what first caught my attention: the language. The first time I heard a string of Chinese seamlessly interwoven into a line of backwoods American dialect, I was fascinated, and I listened carefully. Just on the basis of the language, I could almost figure out the whole world, the whole culture that serves as Firefly’s backdrop. That is an amazing feat of world building. In just a few lines of dialog I knew that this was a frontier society that had developed out of a merging of American and Chinese cultures. The actors handled that mash of language so well that I believed in the world, utterly.

Firefly had good world building in spades. This was a show that paid attention to the details, and that’s rare. I love it when a show makes me pay attention to the details. I wish more of them did.

I’ve just started playing the Serenity RPG with a group of friends. The world is too good to just give up on, so we’re going to see how well it does in a role-playing campaign. We have a good ship. We have a Captain, a Mechanic, a Doctor, a Companion. A couple of crazy mercs. A crazy…whatever (haven’t quite figured out what she is yet). And yeah, it feels a bit like coming home.

This world’ll keep flying for a good long while, I reckon. Love’ll keep a science fiction franchise in the air when she oughta fall down…

Firefly to Relaunch as Online World

We can all count 2007 a financial and work wash for me. I officially will not be leaving the house but playing Firefly 24/7 now that they are going to launch an online game around it.

Like Capt. Mal Reynolds stumbling in after a bar fight, the short-lived but much beloved sci-fi series Firefly will soon make an unexpected return, not as a TV show, but as a massively multiplayer online game.

Now that’s shiny.

Multiverse, maker of a free MMO-creation platform, plans to announce Friday morning that it’s struck a deal with Fox Licensing to turn the show into an MMORPG in the fashion of Star Wars Galaxies or Eve Online.

The “Browncoats,” as Firefly’s most devoted fans are known, have been campaigning to bring the show back almost since the moment it was canceled in late 2002. Now they’ll get their wish, albeit in a new form.

An Introduction To Firefly

Firefly is the Fox Cancelled Series that is trying to make a comeback. I was sitting around tonight watching old episodes and thought I would share it with you guys.

For those you who don’t know. I’m not a sci-fi fan. But I’m a massively addicted Firefly/Serenity addict. Who just can’t get enough of this religion. What religion? Whedonism. The half annoying semi zealous fanboyistic approach I take to everything that Josh Whedon has ever done.

Although the real reason I love the show is pretty obvious.

Well starting tommorow I’m going to start watching the whole series all over again, and then top it all off with the movie. All before New Years. Just because I love the show and I love the way this site is taking off.

So in the meantime while you wait around to hear my first review. Go check out that link above or go Netflix the series.
